Even though Republic Resumes is closed until January next year, I’ll still write on this blog. Here are some thoughts from the employment/unemployment sector front line.

The most interesting one is today’s front page story in The Advertiser (Adelaide), which says that the Covid-19 virus and the restrictions, are actually an OPPORTUNITY for South Australians, because of the state’s ‘lifestyle advantages’. That even though the state is in a labour market Depression, the virus will actually create new jobs.

That’s news to the 50,000 people who have lost their jobs in the last six months and who joined the 47,000 people who were already unemployed and the 120,000 who are underemployed.

Even so, if you’re looking for a job, focus on supply chains such as working in warehouses or as delivery drivers.

There is also work for website builders, especially if they have e-commerce experience.

When applying for a job, tailor your resume to that specific job. Don’t just send out a generic resume.

If you’re writing your own resume, focus on your achievements, not duties.

Include awards or received commendations you’ve received at work.

List your best referee first and make sure the contact number is correct.

Always check the fine print in an employment contract and make sure you are being paid the Award wage and super. Wage theft is on the march.

These are just a few points from the Republic frontline.

And don’t forget to go outside, smell the flowers and pat a dog.
