Update the resume to fit the job

It’s important to tailor and update the resume to fit the job.

When reading a job advertisement, check that you have all or at least 80 per cent of the criteria and experience they ask for in your resume.

If you don’t, update the resume.

Then check you haven’t made grammar and spelling mistakes while updating it.

Your resume should convince the recruiter or employer that you are qualified and have the experience to perform the job. If there are ‘information’ gaps, you will not get short-listed.

One hint is if you’re revamping the whole resume to suit one job, the chances are that job isn’t for you.

While you’re there…

Remove jobs that are more than ten years old. Although those jobs might hold some nostalgia for you (or not), recruiters will think they’re padding.

If you’ve learned new skills, taken a professional short course or high-level study, include those.

Drop a few key words from the job position in to your resume. If you’re applying for an office administration position, include the software and databases you used.
