Finding part-time work

While there are fewer jobs available right now, those looking for part-time or flexible work might actually have better chances than they did pre-coronavirus.

Searching for a job in a recession is tricky enough. Searching for part-time work can feel even more daunting.

But there’s a silver lining to coronavirus-related restrictions, according to Sydney-based career management coach and Navigating Career Crossroads author Jane Jackson.

While there are fewer jobs and more candidates in the market right now, those looking for part-time or flexible work might actually have better chances than they did before the virus.

“Companies now are really trying to cut costs, and taking someone on for a permanent, full-time role is very challenging,” she says. “So if you are looking for part-time work or job sharing, that is an option now.”

Use job sites that offer flexibility. It’s worth looking on job sites specifically tailored to job share arrangements, flexible roles, and part-time work, Ms Jackson says.

Work180, Puffling and Flexjobs are three examples of such sites.

These job boards might suit women who have been thrown out of work.

You can also make the major job sites work for you by selecting “work from home” in the location field when searching for a role. (If you’re in an industry that can work remotely, that is.)

This tends to yield more part-time results than you’d otherwise find if you restricted the search to your own city or state, Ms Jackson says.

It works particularly well during the pandemic, with many organisations having shifted to a remote working model.
