No pulse in Adelaide news

It is my sad duty to inform all journalism job seekers and graduates, that applications for media positions (except the ABC) should be directed to the eastern states.

News reporting as a career in Adelaide is on life support.

The Messenger Press will stop newspaper production and the following newspapers will now be published online, effectively killing off the following titles:

Messenger City, Messenger Adelaide Hills, Messenger South Plus, Messenger East Plus, Messenger North, Messenger West and Upper Spencer Gulf.

The Messenger Coast Plus edition will close completely.

As The Advertiser struggles for relevance and a readership, this puts an end to News Corporation titles in South Australia.

News Corp blamed a sharp decline in advertising revenue, exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis.

But The Advertiser and Messenger Press were in deep trouble long before the virus hit. They suffered massive falls in readership, circulation and advertising for the last nine years.

They are not the only ones as InDaily is a ghost of its former self and the Adelaide Review is unreadable. Unless advertising picks up, both will be dead by Christmas.

Messenger provided suburban news in Adelaide for almost 60 years and was a valuable training ground for generations of reporters. No more.

Every city gets the media it deserves.
