It’s not often that I break into print and complain about a client whose has lost the plot.
This individual came to us wanting a resume updated and a cover letter. In 2018, they graduated with a degree in journalism.
The problem was obvious. In the last eight years the client had only worked two full time jobs – three years in total.
We went back and forwards on taking this person on. No recruiter would hire her.
The job she was applying for was for a well regarded legal organisation in Adelaide.
In 2025, she did four months work as a writer for a construction company.
In the same year, she did three months paid work for a legal office.
From 2024-2022, she worked for two years at another construction company as a writer.
From 2022-2020, she did some part time writing work at UniSA.
We did what we could with the resume by focusing on achievements.
We advised the client how to write a selection criteria and then edited the document.
In her closing email, after we had done all of this work, she said she if selected, she would only stay in the job for five months before going back to study at university.
She hired us to apply for job which she knew she would only stay in for FIVE MONTHS!
Note that HR managers keep lists of people they will never hire again and they talk to recruiters
Adelaide is a very small town.
