Check the job specs before applying

We are a resume writing business which targets jobs. We work in partnership with clients to get them short-listed for positions and where applicable, give them inside knowledge on interview responses.

It’s a good idea before you contact a resume writer to know that you have a sound idea of your objective and have the qualifications and capabilities to reach that objective.

We recently had a secondary teacher who wanted to have a crack at working in the mines. He was young, fit and keen as mustard.

Unfortunately, he had no tickets or licences. He also hadn’t worked in the outback before and had little mechanical aptitude.

He came to us because he kept getting knock back after knock back from mining companies.

“Can’t BHP and Santos understand that I’d be great driving one of those large trucks?” he said. “I’m fit, smart and have a university degree.”

He might have been a real asset to Australia’s mining industry but if you don’t fit the profile, if you haven’t got the licences and tickets, you are history.

One typical profile of a miner is of a male or female who comes from regional or rural Australia. They are mechanically minded, independent but work well in teams.

They are rigorous about safety and can drive a four-wheel drive. They might also have a White card.

Most people reckon they can do a job and that might be true.

Whether or not those expectations are realistic is another matter.
