Most online resume writers don’t live in the cities they claim to be in. They ‘trick’ Google to saying they operate in Adelaide or where ever. Most work out of Sydney or Melbourne. That makes it hard if you want a resume for the Adelaide or Canberra market (I work out of both).
When you ask for a writer to produce a cover letter for a specific job, most will use generic blocks of text they have used thousands of times before. That’s why 90 per cent of non-directed, non-specific cover letters fail. If you want a cover letter, you also need to send the writer your resume and the job ad. Dump generic cover letters. They are a waste of time.
Some resume writers may give you an idea of your chances of getting short listed. But here’s the thing - they don’t really know. You need to make the decision whether to apply before you contact a writer by closely assessing the position criteria.
It’s human nature to think that good professional writers are just waiting by the phone or email (more likely), for your call. If they’re any good, they will be booked up for at least a week. People who ask writers to produce resumes and cover letters 48 hours out from a deadline, are setting themselves up to fail. We pass on them at Republic.
Most resume writers work on a first come, first served basis. Professionals will produce two or three resume drafts, even if it’s a simple document. No matter what sort of document it is, they will want timely information from the client. Expect to be hit by emails wanting information.
People ask me what’s the secret of a good resume. Here it is ….. (drum roll)…State what you did in the job point by point and against each point, state what you achieved.
A couple of times a week I'll get an email or call from someone who wants to see me in person. They haven't read the website but that's OK. I used to see clients in person. But it soon became apparent that most clients who sat next to me, didn't have the information I needed. So they had to go away, find it and come back again. When I sent them to bill for face-to-face contact, many hit the roof. That's why I went online. It was more efficient, cheaper and the clients still got a professional product.
Achievements can be measured as statistics, or in dollar terms or ratios. They can also be measured in qualities, such as building relationships, trust and solving problems using good communication skills. It ain’t rocket science.
Like used car salesmen, there are plenty of shonky resume writers out there. Ask to see their qualifications and experience. Ask to see a dummy (draft resume) and check their form out on their testimonials page. They’ve got to have testimonials. If they don't, keep shopping around.
